Sanduo Festival

The Naxi War God Ceremony

Festival Legend

Where did the guardian deity of the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain come from? Legend traces it back to a miraculous white stone that a hunter could not carry away. When this stone, worshipped as “Sanduo,” revealed its divine power in Baisha, people built a temple there. Since then, a divine general in white armor riding a white horse has protected the Naxi people. The sacrificial ceremony on the 8th day of the second lunar month is the annual echo of this millennia-long guardianship.

Exclusive Experiences

  1. How can I participate properly in a sacred blessing ritual? We book a local elder at the Beiyue Temple for exclusive morning guidance. After explaining the ritual’s origins and symbolism, the elder will lead you through the complete process—from holding a green pine branch to praying facing the mountain—ensuring solemnity and adherence to custom.
  2. I want to dance the “Ah Lili” but am afraid of missing the rhythm. Is there guidance? Our arranged dancer will break down the core steps and transitions before the group dance starts. Then, the dancer will personally guide you into the outermost circle, allowing you to comfortably join the flow with guidance, not just watch.
  3. Can I make the festival’s authentic Lijiang Baba pastry myself?  We arrange a hands-on experience in a Naxi family’s kitchen. Starting from kneading the dough, you’ll complete filling and pan-frying under the housewife’s guidance. Your creation can be part of your picnic that day.
  4. Do I need musical talent for antiphonal singing? Not at all. Our invited singer will teach you a short, greeting-like Naxi melody by Lashi Lake. In a relaxed group call-and-response session, you only need to feel the joy of melodic conversation—no singing skills required.
