The Lahu: A Tiger-Hunting People Born from a Gourd

Geographic Habitat: Deep in the Tea Forests by the Lancang River
Following the rushing currents of the Lancang River, the Lahu people live secluded among the verdant mountains of Pu’er and Lincang. The wind here always carries the faint fragrance of ancient tea trees. They build their stilted wooden houses at the boundary between tea groves and primeval forests, guarding an uncontentious tranquility amidst the morning bells and evening drums.
Historical Roots: The Transition from Nomadic Hunting to the Fragrance of Tea
“Lahu” translates to “the tiger-hunting people.” Once a nomadic hunting tribe that revered martial bravery, they eventually laid down their crossbows, took up farming tools, and became one of the earliest peoples in the world to domesticate and cultivate tea. In the thousand-year-old ancient tea forests of Jingmai Mountain, the Lahu transformed their inherent wildness into deep affection for the land, completing a magnificent evolution from hunting to agriculture.
Spiritual Totem: Animism Strummed on a Guitar
The Lahu believe that humanity was born from a gourd, making the gourd their most sacred totem. Yet, the most touching aspect of this people is their absolute passion for music. They play the guitar when happy and blow the hulusi (gourd flute) when sad. Requiring no complex words, all their emotions and faith are transformed into polyphonic a cappella choruses. By the fire pit, a simple Lahu melody is enough to let you hear the soul’s echo from deep within the mountains.
